Educational Portfolio Contents
Our Educational Portfolio includes a variety of educational, academic and practical teaching tools, resources and activities. The contents can be adjusted to suit particular needs:
- City 1250 Film and accompanying activity sheets
Students watch a short film in which four teenagers discuss their forthcoming year on the (fictional) reality TV show City 1250. Each teenager tells of his or her worries about living in a reconstructed city in the Islamic world in the year 1250. Students then discover how the science and technology of the time addresses each of the teenagers’ worries. They learn about the advances of Muslim scientists in eight vital fields, and consider how their work influenced future scientists in fields including Geography, Astronomy, Pharmacy, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

- A Journey of Ideas Teaching Tool
This takes us to Baghdad in the year 1250 as its base and analyses its achievements and influence using both a historical and a scientific approach. It has been developed by key members of The Historical Association and The Association for Science Education.
- Library of Secrets film
Oscar-winning actor and screen legend Sir Ben Kingsley has taken the starring role in this short feature film about the scientific heritage of Muslim civilisation. Sir Ben takes on the role of a mysterious and cantankerous librarian who takes a group of schoolchildren on an enlightening journey to pioneering scientists and engineers, both men and women, from the Muslim civilisation.

This maps historical, scientific and technological discoveries relevant to the schools National Curriculum. The pack contains teacher’s guides and experiments to use in school. It is devised for supporting teachers in the classroom.

Additional information and more detailed coverage with a comprehensive collection of articles, lectures and discourses from leading academics including Professor Salim Al-Hassani, Professor Jim Al-Khalili, Professor George Saliba and TV presenters Adam Hart-Davis and Bettany Hughes.
- MIT Blossoms
The MIT-based BLOSSOMS program is creating a repository of interactive science and math video lessons at the secondary school level. The focus is on developing critical thinking skills, excitement about math and science, showing science/math relevance to everyday life, and – very important — cross-cultural awareness and appreciation.
